Holiday Feast and Treats

The holidays are fun times around the LeBlanc household.  The dogs especially love it when their humans are home cuddling and not busying ourselves with work.  Not to say the holidays aren't work, but there is some more down time spent with the babies.  Routines aren't as strict as daily 0400 walks and 0700 feed times.  The dogs adjust well as long as we continue to keep them busy.  They love having guests over, love all the excitement in the air.  We are constantly aware of the goings on in the house and try to keep it simple.  The biggest issue we run into over the break is temptations.  The dogs are stimulated by all the food that is being prepared.  We are very careful and expect the guests to also be careful about leaving food around.  There are so many things that are bad for dogs that you as a parent may not be aware.  So, let's discuss the don'ts.

Onions...these are TOXIC to dogs.  It causes anemia and hemolysis, causing your pup to go into organ failure and possibly death.  This means fresh and cooked onions. onion skin, dried onions, onion powder and flakes, everything onion.  They only have to ingest 0.5% of their body weight in onions.  Signs of onion poisoning include

vomiting and diarrhea

not eating

abdominal pain

pale gums, lethargy

stumbling and or loss of balance

red or brown urine

This is an emergency, and you must take your pup to the vet immediately!

Other toxic foods to pups are raisins, or grapes causing vomiting and kidney failure

Macadamia nuts causing nausea, tremors, seizures, paralysis

Xylitol. a sweetener found in gum, baked goods, toothpaste, can cause vomiting, lethargy and seizures and liver failure

Nutmeg can cause tremors, seizures, and nervous system issues.

Cooked bones, they can splinter and cause trauma to stomach and esophagus.

Christmas ham, too much salt, causing vomiting and possibly pancreatitis.

Alcohol, poisoned easily, can develop nausea, difficulty breathing.
